My love of picture books has influenced all my work. Whether I'm illustrating a book or creating a whimsical 3-D creature or beast, words & images from the books of my youth inspire me. I feel fortunate to have those stories & pictures as part of who I am, even today.
I can still vividly remember the way my legs itched while reading a picture book & looking at an illustration of a little girl sitting on a horsehair sofa, I remember the delicate line drawings & the subtle watercolor washes. I still smile when I think of Old Father Williams standing on his head, Lucy Locket, or an 'Old Mother' of a Grimm's fairy tale. I know my enthusiasm for reading had its start in lazy childhood days spent with well loved books.
It was such fun creating my 'Little Bear' for National Picture Book Week. I tried to give him an open face & heart, the perfect young reader!
